Managed By The Virginia Port Authority

Owned by the City of Richmond, the RMT is leased to the Virginia Port Authority and is operated by PCI of Virginia, LLC. PCI provides stevedoring services on a full range of supply chain services including export packaging and transfer, and warehouse and inland distribution services. Learn more.

Barge Service Operations Three Times A Week

The RMT handles containers, temperature-controlled containers, breakbulk, bulk, and neo-bulk cargo. Major export/import cargoes include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, forest products, paper, machinery, consumer goods, frozen seafood, produce, campers, steel, steel products, stone, tobacco leaf, aluminum, project cargo, vehicles, boats, wire coils, wire rods, pipe, and aplite. Learn more.

Strategic Location

The Richmond Marine Terminal has the quickest access of any port to I-95, the principal north-south transportation artery on the East Coast with excellent east-west access via I-64, as well as I-81 and I-70. The Port is located 4 miles from the CBD.

Now Serving The World's Second-Largest Shipping Line

Major Transportation Network Hub

More than 100 motor freight companies and brokers serve the area, including specialists in heavy hauling, over-dimensional loads, and liquid and dry bulk. CSX provides direct rail connection with local switch service via Norfolk Southern. Richmond International Airport (RIC) is in Foreign Trade Zone #207, which is only 20 minutes from the Richmond Marine Terminal.

Westernmost Commercial Maritime Port On North Atlantic Coast

The Richmond Marine Terminal is located at 77° 25' west longitude and 37° 27' north latitude on the James River, 100 miles from Cape Henry and approximately 78 miles above Newport News, Virginia. The Port is the western terminus for commercial navigation on the James River and is the westernmost commercial maritime port on the North Atlantic coast.

Virginia Pilot Association Vessel Requirements:

  • Maximum length: 559 feet

  • Maximum beam: 85 feet, 6 inches

  • Maximum draft: 22 feet 

Vessels up to 255 feet may transit at night from Hopewell to the Port of Richmond.

The tidal range is 3 feet at the Port; prevailing winds are southeasterly and dockwater density is 1025.
