Training Academy

Situated on the campus of Virginia Union University, the Richmond Police Training Academy is a service-oriented unit whose primary function is to provide high quality training for police recruits, veteran sworn personnel, and civilian employees, in addition to ensuring compliance with required state-mandated training. Instruction offered by Academy staff includes basic recruit training, firearms training, and computer training.
The Academy houses a large multipurpose room, a tiered 70-person classroom, three 35-person classrooms, an indoor firing range, a firearms simulator training room, a 12-station computer lab, library, small conference room and administrative staff offices. The Academy offers a state-of-the-art fitness facility, with a weight room, racket ball court, gymnasium, and locker rooms, that is used by both sworn and civilian employees. The Department emphasizes fitness through its Physical Fitness Program, which includes aerobic and strength training classes, as well as wellness programs.
