About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations
Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.
Lillie Ann Estes
A leading voice in the promotion of fair housing practices, Lillie Ann Estes contributed greatly to social activism and community service in the city of Richmond. Her activities and honors included founding Residents of Public Housing Against Mass Eviction and the Charles S. Gilpin Community Farm, Community Justice Film Series; involvement with the Maggie L. Walker Initiative for Expanding Opportunity and Fighting Poverty, the Virginia Poverty Law Center, Hope in the Cities, the Community Justice Network; and receiving the Mothers of Courage Award from Mothers for Justice and Equality; among many other accomplishments and accolades.
Designation Area:
The first block of East Charity Street has been given the honorary designation of Lillie Estes Lane.
