Richmond 250: Revolution to Renaissance
Revolution: Our Beginning, Our Future
Richmond stands at a unique intersection of history and possibility highlighted by the commemoration of our nation's 250th anniversary. While the City acknowledges 1776 as a pivotal moment that advanced liberty and democracy for some, we also see the ways this anniversary calls us to an honest reckoning with both our history and present.
Renaissance: Our History, Our Stories
Mayor Danny Avula's Mayoral Action Plan recognizes what many of us already know: the issues and inequalities we face today stem directly from our history. Richmond has witnessed by unthinkable inhumanity and courageous, visionary resistance to racism and oppression. The "City that tells its stories" pillar makes a commitment to telling the truth about our own history and to use that truth-telling as a foundation for building a more inclusive, more equitable future.
Virginia250, along with the Richmond region's contributions, are not about passive observation or sanitized nostalgia. Through our shared work in this commemorative year, we will show how we work toward a thriving multiracial democracy based on the sharing of power and shared commitments to building a better city.
Achieving this vision for Virginia250 takes each of us. We need a range of voices and perspectives to create the conversations, activities, and other opportunities that will help us move these goals forward. Learn how you can get involved by checking out the resources and events below:
