The Office of Immigrant and Refugee Engagement - OIRE
**Formerly known as Office of Multicultural Affairs
We have developed a series of ongoing programs based on input from our customers and by identifying unmet needs in Richmond’s immigrant communities. Our office also provides services to improve residents’ access to critical resources and overcome linguistic barriers. The following programs and services are provided by the OMA free of charge to City residents.
Latino Youth Leadership Academy: A program designed to fill the need of teens from immigrant backgrounds to explore their cultural roots and empower them to access education and employment opportunities after high school.
Herramientas para Mamá (Motherhood Initiative): A course designed to empower mothers with cultural knowledge, resiliency, and self-esteem to be more effective parents. Presented in Spanish and hosted by OMA.
Un Café Entre Amigas (Coffee with the Girls): A casual support group where Latina women are encouraged to talk about women’s issues, network, and support one another. Conducted in Spanish and hosted by OMA.
Caminos (Pathways): A support group for Latino parents with children with autism and other disabilities. Conducted in Spanish and hosted by the Sacred Heart Center.
Business Funding Workshops: A series of classes for small business owners to learn about sources of capital and types of loans available. Presented in Spanish and hosted by OMA and the Department of Housing and Community Development.
Networking Group: We host a bi-monthly event that serves as opportunity to meet and partner with other organizations and programs providing services to immigrant communities.
Civic Education for New Immigrants: An orientation session designed to provide a broad perspective of the cultural differences on the daily life in this country.

Navigation services - Connecting customers to existing service providers and community resources in essential areas of life based on assessment of needs.
Language Access services for City residents - Sight Translation (oral translation) of documents from Spanish to English
Legal Clinic (Immigration Law) - hosted by the OMA and sponsored by the Consular Section of the Embassy of Mexico.
Legal Clinic (Tax Law) - hosted by the OMA and sponsored by the Tax Law Project.
Medicaid application assistance hosted by OMA and provided by the Virginia Health Care Foundation and CoverVA.
