🚲 Bike lane FAQs

Why can’t I park in bike lanes?

Parking in the bike lane is not allowed, even briefly. Bike lanes are active travel lanes designated exclusively for use by cyclists of all ages and abilities. When a car is parked there, cyclists are forced to swerve into moving vehicle traffic—a situation that can cause serious crashes. Keeping bike lanes clear is one of the simplest and best ways we can look out for our neighbors on bikes. Avoid parking in bike lanes even if you’re running a quick errand, waiting for someone, or dropping off a passenger.

Can my delivery driver park in the bike lane?

No. Delivery vehicles are held to the same rules as all other drivers — bike lanes must remain clear at all times. We know deliveries can be tricky, especially on busy streets, but blocking the bike lane puts cyclists in a difficult and potentially dangerous position. Drivers should look for a loading zone, a legal parking spot, or a side street nearby.

Can I park in the painted buffer between bikes and cars?

No. The painted buffer zone (sometimes called a "parking-protected" or "floating" lane separator) is off-limits for parking or stopping. That space exists as a safety cushion between cyclists and moving or parked vehicles. Placing a car there eliminates that protection and can block cyclists' visibility at intersections. Please treat the buffer the same way you'd treat a solid white line — don't cross it, and don't park in it.

What happens when leaves or trash end up in the bike lane?

We appreciate everyone who keeps their yard tidy, but please don't blow leaves into the bike lane or leave trash or bulky items there, even on collection day! A thick layer of wet leaves is surprisingly slippery and can cause a cyclist to lose control, especially when braking. And bins and bulk items force cyclists into traffic just like parked cars do. Trash and raked or blown leaves should go to the curb in front of your property ahead of scheduled collections. Find more information about waste collection at go.rva.gov/solid-waste
