Repair Progress Continues on 36-Inch Water Main

Richmond, VA — Department of Public Utilities (DPU) crews continue making progress on repairs following the 36-inch water main break that occurred on Friday, July 3.

This week, crews successfully bypassed water flows in the canal and completed excavation of the damaged section of the water main. Work is now underway to remove the damaged pipe in preparation for replacement.

Installation of the new section of pipe is expected to take place over the next several days. Following installation, the water main will undergo required pressure testing and disinfection before it is returned to service. The line is currently expected to be back in service on or around July 18.

The 36-inch water main is nearing the end of its useful service life and had previously been identified in DPU's 10-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for replacement as part of the department's ongoing efforts to improve the reliability and resiliency of Richmond's water distribution system.
